LONDON (The Deal) -- European and Asian stock indices were mixed Wednesday, Sept. 18, as investors waited for the Federal Reserve to pronounce on the level of monthly bond purchases at the end of a two-day meeting later Wednesday.
Economists predict the central bank will scale back monthly purchases to about $75 billion from $85 billion, reducing the monetary stimulus even as some indicators suggest U.S. growth is stalling.

For those of you that were lucky enough to read, and act on, my bullish call on ZBB Energy Corporation (NYSEMKT:ZBB) penned one week ago (almost to the hour), then congratulations - you're up 270%, give or take. Now get out. Seriously. I have a funny feeling that ZBB along with FuelCell Energy Inc. (NASDAQ:FCEL), Ballard Power Systems Inc. (NASDAQ:BLDP), and all the other names in the alternative electricity-production group are seeing their last hurrah today. The smart money is already thinking about getting out now, selling into the strength all the late-comers are creating for FCEL, BLDP, and its peers.

ZBB Energy is a power storage and a power management name that's found a market by serving the renewable energy and small-scale energy niche. It's been lumped in with similar plays like Plug Power Inc. (NASDAQ:PLUG) and Ballard Power Systems Inc. (NASDAQ:BLDP), and it's not an inappropriate comparison. Though much smaller than BLDP and PLUG, ZBB lives and dies by the same sword that Plug Power and Ballard Power Systems live and die by. There's one difference between ZBB Energy and its peers right now, however - ZBB is knocking on the door of a breakout.

What sectors and industries have you been looking at most closely lately? One theme I've been exploring over the last year or so is "Machine to Machine" (M2M) technology, also known as the "Internet of Things."
- [By Holly LaFon]
I'm still pretty bullish on "Machine to Machine" (M2M) technology, also known as the "Internet of Things," which I've discussed before. More recently, I've also been exploring opportunities around a recovery in non-residential construction. Much of the activity in the industry over the last couple of years has come from the renovation and replacement areas, but there's been a pick-up in order activity on the new construction side as well. It hasn't really hit the income statements of these businesses yet, but I'm confident going forward, especially in those companies that I hold inRoyce Value Plus's portfolio that have held their own in a tough down cycle for their industry.

In the table below, we've listed a sample of small-cap semiconductor capital equipment stocks such as Entegris (ENTG), Advanced Energy Industries (AEIS), ATMI Inc. (ATMI), MKS Instruments (MKSI), Photronics Inc. (PLAB), Rudolph Technologies (RTEC),FormFactor (FORM) and Mattson Technology (MTSN). The peers trade at approximately 1.0x and 15.5x 2014E revenues and EPS, respectively. Furthermore, the average peer trades at 2.1x tangible book value. However, these multiples are based on average 2014E industry revenue and earnings growth of 18% and 119%, respectively. Axcelis is poised to grow at a rate substantially above the industry average.
- [By Roberto Pedone]
My first earnings short-squeeze trade idea is photomasks maker Photronics (PLAB), which is set to release numbers on Tuesday after the market close. Wall Street analysts, on average, expect Photronics to report revenue of $106.05 million on earnings of 8 cents per share.
About a month ago, Needham downgraded shares of Photronics to hold from buy following the company's negative preannouncement. Needham anticipates that Photronics will face some near-term challenges and may not generate EPS over 80 cents per share until fiscal year 2015.
The current short interest as a percentage of the float Photronics is pretty high at 11.9%. That means that out of the 59.69 million shares in the tradable float, 7.38 million shares are sold short by the bears. This is a high short interest on a stock with a relatively low float. Any bullish earnings news could easily spark a large short-squeeze for shares of PLAB post-earnings.
From a technical perspective, PLAB is currently trending above both its 50-day and 200-day moving averages, which is bullish. This stock has been uptrending over the last three months and change, with shares moving higher from its low of $7.03 to its recent high of $8.89 a share. During that uptrend, shares of PLAB have been making mostly higher lows and higher highs, which is bullish technical price action. That move has now pushed shares of PLAB within range of triggering a near-term breakout trade post-earnings.
If you're bullish on PLAB, then I would wait until after its report and look for long-biased trades if this stock manages to break out above some near-term overhead resistance levels at $8.74 to its 52-week high at $8.89 a share with high volume. Look for volume on that move that hits near or above its three-month average action of 212,683 shares. If that breakout hits, then PLAB will set up to enter new 52-week-high territory, which is bullish technical price action. Some possible upside targets off that move a

The last few weeks haven't been particularly encouraging for Crohn's disease sufferers. In August, GlaxoSmithKline (NYSE: GSK) and ChemoCentryx (NASDAQ:CCXI) reported that a jointly-developed Crohn's drug, vercirnon, had failed to meet its late-stage trial endpoints. Though the in-development drug isn't dead in the water (GSK and CCXI could rework the drug, the testing regimen, or use it for other indications), it doesn't look good. Then this month - just a few days ago - Coronado Biosciences Inc. (NASDAQ:CNDO) reported that its Phase 3 trials of Crohn's disease drug TSO had also failed to meet its primary endpoints as well. Like vercirnon, CNDO isn't completely out of luck here with the treatment, but forging ahead with further development of the treatment is grasping at straws. Crohn's sufferers don't need to give up home just yet, however - TNI Biotech Inc. (OTCMKTS:TNIB) appears to have a Crohn's treatment that works, and should be able to sidestep the problems that plagued ChemoCentryx, GlaxoSmithKline, and Coronado Biosciences.

Leading the pack higher was cloud-software solutions company salesforce.com (NYSE: CRM ) , which advanced 4.2% on a report that it is about to announce a cloud-software alliance with Oracleaccording to the The New York Times. The deal would be beneficial to both parties, as it would allow data to be easily shared between Oracle and salesforce's software, potentially making both attractive to prospective software clients. It would certainly make sense for Oracle, which missed Wall Street's estimates with its third-quarter results, and disappointed with its fourth-quarter outlook.
