Chairman Bill Marriott sat down with me to talk about the companys evolution from root beer stand to global hotel empire, what he learned from Dwight Eisenhower, and the four most important words in business. A video and transcript of our conversation follows.
Steve Forbes: Bill, thank you for joining us.
Bill Marriott: Thank you, Steve.
Forbes: And before we begin, since Im a wannabe author and try to sell books, so plug your book.
Marriott: Thank you.
Forbes: Fascinating.
Marriott: Without Reservations.
Forbes: Its an excellent one. And before getting into the operations of Marriott today, just want to hit on people. Every CEO talks about the importance of people, but youve practiced it in a way that certainly is revolutionary for the hotel and motel industry. So, what do you do thats different.
Marriott: My dad started it all back in the 30s when we had a root beer stand and then a restaurant. And one day the cook didnt show up and he decided he better get a program going so he could retain his people and keep them happy. And he put a doctor on the payroll to do their healthcare and a few years later he put a surgeon on the payroll to do their healthcare. But its always been the major belief of our company, take good care of your people, theyll take good care of the customer and the customer will come back.

Advisors' Opinion:- [By Peter Graham]
The Q2 2014 earnings report for Navistar International Corp (NYSE: NAV), a potential peer of light, medium- and heavy-duty truck or engine makers PACCAR Inc (NASDAQ: PCAR) and Cummins Inc (NYSE: CMI), is scheduled to report earnings after the market closes on Thursday.Aside from the Navistar International Corp earnings report, it should be said that PACCAR Inc and Cummins Inc bothreported Q1 2014 earnings on April 29th (PCAR reported higher revenues and net incomewhile CMI hit a52-week high after a beat and raised guidance). However, Navistar International Corphas lost market share since 2012 whenUS regulators denied approval of a redesigned diesel engine that failed to reduce green house gas levels forcing the company to turn torival Cummins Inc to supply engines as it develops its own catalytic reduction engines to reduce nitrogen oxide emissions.
- [By Brian Stoffel]
The business from PACCAR (NASDAQ: PCAR ) in particular, is important to Cummins. In 2012, PACCAR accounted for 13% of Cummins' consolidated net sales. If any of these companies were to switch to a different engine maker, or choose to make their own engines in-house, it would likely cause a noticeable decline in revenue.

Paccar Inc. (PCAR) climbed 2.9%. The heavy-duty truck maker, which owns the Peterbilt and Kenworth brands, said last week its fourth-quarter earnings rose to 94 cents a share from 72 cents a share.

Results from truck-maker Paccar (NASDAQ: PCAR), toymaker Mattel (NASDAQ: MAT) and lumber-and-paper maker Weyerhaeuser (NYSE: WY) on Friday may offer a glimpse of what's ahead.

While there are several exchange-traded funds (ETFs) devoted to TIPS, my favorite is PIMCO 1-5 Year US TIPS Index (NYSE: STPZ).
This ETF has one of the lowest durations of any of the TIPS funds at 2.7 years, so it won’t take much of a ding based on shifting interest rates.
