Former Philadelphia Fed President Edward Boehne elegantly described the approach at a Federal Open Market Committee (FOMC) meeting in late 1989:

ow, sooner or later, we will have a recession. I don think anybody around the table wants a recession or is seeking one, but sooner or later we will have one. If in that recession we took advantage of the anti-inflation (impetus) and we got inflation down from 4 1/2 percent to 3 percent, and then in the next expansion we were able to keep inflation from accelerating, sooner or later there will be another recession out there. And so, if we could bring inflation down from cycle to cycle just as we let it build up from cycle to cycle, that would be considerable progress over what wee done in other periods in history./p>

Also interesting is that the duration of rising rate environments is distinctly shorter after 1982. The average duration declines to 14 months from 40 months prior to 1982. A possible explanation could be changes in the monetary mechanism influencing interest rates. In 1982, the Federal Open Market Committee (FOMC) first referenced a targeted federal funds rate.7

KTLA-5 News/APWorkers rescue people from the Ninja coaster at Six Flags. Nearly two dozen riders of a roller coaster at Six Flags Magic Mountain got more thrills than they were expecting on Monday when a tree branch obstructed the track at the Southern California amusement park, dislodging part of the train. It took three hours for crews to evacuate all 22 passengers off the suspended Ninja coaster. Four riders were injured when the ride came to a screeching halt, but all of the injuries were deemed initially minor. It could've been catastrophic -- especially with one of the cars perilously hanging off of the track. The accident took place after the market close on Monday, but shares of Six Flags (SIX) dipped a mere 0.2 percent on Tuesday -- considerably better than the overall market's decline that day. Wall Street either didn't make the connection or figured that Six Flags isn't likely to suffer any attendance declines as a result of the incident. Accidents Happen It's early in the busy season for regional amusement park operators, but there have already been plenty of cases of popular coasters being temporarily stalled due to mechanical breakdowns. Evacuations using cherry pickers with folks shuttled off to hospitals as a precaution are rare -- and this may be the first tree-related incident resulting in a partial derailing -- but setbacks happen. As a park-goer or an investor in Six Flags, Cedar Fair (FUN) or even Disney (DIS), this doesn't mean that it's time to worry. There are risks involved in every kind of social outing, and the occasional accident on a roller coaster shouldn't be a deciding factor in whether you let your children on the rides or decide to hold back on your own white-knuckled pursuits.

Lori Shepler/AP A financial windfall will accompany LeBron James when he returns to northeastern Ohio. Following the NBA superstar's decision over the weekend to return to the Cleveland Cavaliers, Cuyahoga County officials estimated that the local economy will benefit to the tune of roughly $500 million a year. A little more than half of that windfall will come from the games themselves as ticket sales spike with fans willing to pay more -- and more often -- to see James play near his hometown of Akron. The balance will come from tourism and the exposure that comes from TV coverage that will gravitate to Cavaliers home games. Some experts, though. caution that the real revenue will be far less. However, an unlikely winner from James' move may be of the country's largest amusement park operators. Please Secure All Loose Belongings Just 62 miles separate the Cavs' arena and Cedar Fair's (FUN) Cedar Point amusement park, on a scenic peninsula in Sandusky. Last Wednesday -- two days before James made his big announcement that he would leave the Miami Heat after four seasons -- Cedar Point made an interesting Twitter post: "Hey @KingJames - come back to the @cavs and we'll rename one of our coasters, 'King James!' Ball in your court, sir. RT, #Ohio!" It wasn't just talk. Shortly after James announced his decision to return home, Cedar Point promised to live up to its earlier promise: "It's been fun to watch the excitement surrounding the return of @KingJames to Cleveland. We stand ready to honor our original tweet." James has been to the park a couple of times, and there's a YouTube video of him being heckled there while taking in a game of hoops -- naturally, after he had left Cleveland for Miami. However, the initially radical thought of renaming a coaster King James now sounds like a winning move with the game's best basketball player coming back home as a prodigal son. That should be good news for Cedar Point and possibly even better news for Cedar Fair.
