Over 80 stocks were featured in last year's Top Picks report. The very best performer? George Putnam. Here, the editor of The Turnaround Letter updates this top-performing stock pick and highlights some additional year-end bounce candidates.
Steve Halpern: We are here today with George Putnam, Editor of the Turnaround Letter. How are you doing, George?
George Putnam: Fine. Thanks, Steve.
Steve Halpern: Today, we're concluding a series of interviews with the top performing advisors from last year's Top Picks Report, and of the 81 stocks in that report, you had the number one performing pick, MGIC Investment, which is up about 215%. Congratulations.
George Putnam: Thank you very much.
Steve Halpern: Could you review the original reasoning for choosing MGIC last year and what has occurred during 2013 to account for the stock's strong performance?
George Putnam: Sure. Well, MGIC Investment Corp. (MTG), which insures mortgages—residential mortgages—was really hammered back in 2007, 2008, and it struggled to, sort of, dig out of the hole that it got in from all of the defaults that individual homeowners made on their mortgages.

Advisors' Opinion:- [By James E. Brumley]
At first glance it would be easy to assume the recent bullishness from Hastings Entertainment, Inc. (NASDAQ:HAST) was nothing more than a little volatility, as is common for many small cap stocks. After all, HAST shares have been beaten down pretty well since the middle of last year, and a little bit of "up" relief is likely in the cards. As it turns out, however, the current reversal we're seeing from this stock may be a far bigger - and a far longer lasting - turnaround than traders may realize with just a quick look.

- [By Credit.com] Getty Images Tax time can be stressful enough without worrying about whether your tax issues will spill over to your credit reports and affect your scores. The good news is that simply filing an extension or finding that you owe the IRS a chunk of money come tax time shouldn't affect your credit reports. It's only when you don't have the money to pay what you owe that it can affect your credit. Following are five ways that your yearly payment to Uncle Sam can affect your credit. Going Into Hock to Pay Taxes Many years ago, in my first year of self-employment, my accountant calculated my estimated taxes but forgot about the "self-employment tax" -- the portion of taxes that cover Medicare and Social Security. As a result, I learned on April 14 (!) that I owed a much bigger tax bill than I expected. At that time there was no option to pay by credit card, and I didn't want to drain my savings entirely to pay it. I ended up taking out a personal loan from my bank at a low interest rate and paid it off fairly quickly. It worked out OK. The loan, however, did appear on my credit reports. It didn't create any problems for me, but if you are going to borrow from another source such as credit cards or a personal loan to pay your taxes, keep in mind that debt can affect your credit scores. How much it will hurt (or help) your scores depends on everything else in your credit reports. Keep it in perspective, though. After all, you may find it's better to owe a credit card issuer than to owe the IRS. Another option is to enter into an installment agreement with the IRS where you pay them monthly until your balance is paid off. In most cases, these payment plans don't appear on your credit. However, if you owe a large amount, you could wind up with a Notice of Federal Tax Lien filed against you, and that will definitely affect your credit. (More on that later.) Quick Refund Woes If you need your refund fast, you may be tempted to take advantage of a "refund

Alamy Personal finance author Barbara Stanny realized she was earning too little money when she interviewed women bringing home six figures or more for one of her books. "Of the first 15, three of them were writers. It was such an empowering thing for me to see. There were people doing what I was doing, but they were making more," she recalls. She committed to follow their lead, and before she finished her book, she had started earning six figures herself. Earning too little money, which Stanny defines as earning less than you need or desire, despite efforts to do otherwise, is a problem so common that Stanny started giving workshops on the topic. Eventually, it became the subject of her next book, "Overcoming Underearning." Others have also tackled the issue: Underearners Anonymous, a support group based on a 12-step program, is dedicated to helping people who find themselves trapped in a low-income cycle. And Bari Tessler Linden, a popular financial therapist, addresses the topic in her work, too. Tom Anderson, a freelance writer based in New York, wrote about visiting an Underearners Anonymous meeting for the financial website LearnVest earlier this year. "The median age was mid-40s, and it was a pretty diverse bunch of people from all different socioeconomic backgrounds," he told U.S. News. The session focused on improving time management skills, goal setting and being more career focused, he says. After the meeting, he says, "I did adjust my own expectations for my finances and what revenue targets I wanted to hit." Anderson says he would recommend the experience to anyone who is comfortable with the spiritual side of 12-step programs and who is not doing a good job of valuing their time, which often has a negative impact on earning power. (Underearners Anonymous did not respond to requests for comment.) Financial therapist Linden says in order to overcome her own struggle with underearning (in her 20s, she worked in hospice and as a counselor, and

Calling all cash flows
When you are trying to buy the market's best stocks, it's worth checking up on your companies' free cash flow once a quarter or so, to see whether it bears any relationship to the net income in the headlines. That's what we do with this series. Today, we're checking in on VCA Antech (Nasdaq: WOOF ) , whose recent revenue and earnings are plotted below. - [By Sean Williams]
Let's also not forget about the physical surgical and veterinary centers themselves. VCA Antech (NASDAQ: WOOF ) , for instance, operates more than 600 hospitals around the U.S., as well as 55 diagnostic laboratories. Like PetSmart, VCA hasn't seen a decline in revenue in any of the past 10 years, growing sales by 212% over that timespan thanks to growth in services rendered, ample pricing power, and strong ancillary sales of premium food and vitamins from its hospitals and veterinary centers.

Abouta week ago, Wall Street was biting small cap pet stock Petmed Express Inc (NASDAQ: PETS) for not living up to its earnings expectations- meaning it might be worth taking a closer look at the stockand compare its performance with other pet stocks like mid cap PetSmart, Inc (NASDAQ: PETM) and small cap VCA Antech Inc (NASDAQ: WOOF). I should also mention that we have recently added Petmed Express to our SmallCap Network Elite Opportunity (SCN EO) portfolio because we think the stock is undervalued in the pet space and has tremendous growth potentialmoving forward.
